Saturday May 6, 2017 marked the 143rd Kentucky Derby. Let me start with saying I know nothing about racing. The few times I went to a horse or dog race, I picked the animals that looked cutest for that race or had fun names. Had I gone to the Kentucky Derby, I would have picked Practical Joke. If you’re wondering, he placed fifth. I knew I should have picked Always Dreaming! He has that cute little spot on his head. :)
Kentucky is also known for its bourbon. While I like bourbon, admittedly I didn’t know much about it. I had heard the saying “all bourbon is whiskey but not all whiskey is bourbon”. I decided to do some research. Apparently there are strict regulations that make bourbon… well bourbon. For example, it has to be made in the U.S., contain 51% corn, and it cannot contain any added flavoring, coloring or other additives. Armed with my new knowledge of bourbon, I decided I would make Bourbon Balls. What better snack to eat during Kentucky Derby Weekend?! I didn’t make the traditional dipped bourbon balls. I decided for a little simpler rum ball recipe and I just switched the bourbon for rum. I rolled them in different toppings like walnuts, sprinkles and powdered sugar for a bit of variety. They are quick, easy and make a great adult snack.
