Fun with Colors

I received a request for colorful cupcakes for a little girl’s unicorn themed birthday party.  Before making the batch for delivery, I wanted to test out some colors and ideas.  Normally I would use the food coloring you buy in the grocery store baking section with the little red, yellow, green, and blue liquid dye droppers.  It works for basic colors, but I wanted happier colors.  I did some research online and found Wilton’s Color Right Performance Color System.  It comes with eight different bottles of concentrated dye and a color chart for reference.  Using the color chart you can create 48 different colors!  This color system also gives you the versatility to make your own shades.

I decided to use the bright and bold chart and make turquoise, purple, pink, and orange.  I separated the batter into 4 different bowls and colored each bowl a different color.  I did the same for the frosting.  I layered the different colored batters in the cupcake tins.  After baking and cooing, I cut up a cupcake to see the result on the inside.  I was very pleased!

I began frosting the cupcakes and the colors were so vibrant.  As I ran out of one color of frosting, I just added another color to same frosting bag since I was just testing out the colors.  It resulted in a really cool airbrushed effect on the cupcakes.  I will definitely use this technique again.
